Looking for a yoga mat? Then you may want to take a few minutes to read this FAQ.
In this article, we’re going to answer the three most frequently asked questions when it comes to buying a new yoga mat. We’re going to see which yoga mat is best for you and whether or not if you should choose a colored yoga mat or not.
“How thick should my new mat be?”
To be honest, that depends on how much support you need. There are lightweight mats which are between 2 to 3 mm in thickness, which won’t give you a lot of support. Then there are the most commonly used ones which are between 4 to 5 mms and the premium ones give you a whopping 7 mms of support to protect your wrists and elbows.
You’re going to have to visit a store or yoga studio and try out a few different thicknesses.
“What kind of quality should I buy?”
I can counter that question with another one, how many times a week do you plan on practicing yoga? If you’re going to practice only once a week or less, you could do with a cheap yoga mat and it’ll last you a while. But if you’re going to start practicing a few times a week, you’re going to need a standard yoga mat, because a light and cheap one will wear out way too quickly. For those of you who’re going to do yoga every day, you’ve only got one option. A premium mat; any other mat is going to wear out really fast if you’re going to practice daily. But premium mats are designed for daily use and can take the daily poundage.
“what’s the best size of mat for me?”
Most yoga mats are the same size, but there are wider yoga mats as well. So if you prefer a yoga mat that is a bit wider than usual, you can search for one of those. There are also round yoga mats, which can be useful for certain advanced positions. But for the majority of people a standard size will surely “fit all”.
As far as color goes, you’ll have to decide for yourself what you want. I prefer a colorful one with a beautiful print. The downside to my choice is that I have to get myself a new mat every few months if I want to keep my mat looking beautiful. Which you wouldn’t have with a black yoga mat for example. The black one is going to look exactly the same one year later, but one with lots of color is going to show some wear. Making the print a bit uglier.
